The Fundamentals of Seeking God’s Heart

Isaiah 55:6
“Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.”

Throughout the Bible, God repeatedly extends the invitation, “Seek Me.”  This invitation is for every person on earth.  Are you an unbeliever?  God is saying to you, “Seek Me.”  Are you a believer?  Have you already come to God through accepting the sacrifice of Jesus Christ?  God’s Word to you is, “Seek Me.”

Why does our Creator tell us to seek Him?  Is He hiding from us?  Not at all.  In fact, His Word (the Bible) reveals that “He is not far from each one of us” (Acts 17:27).

God’s Word also reveals that God is Father, and He has the heart of a father.  Our heavenly Father tells us to seek Him because He desires a relationship with us. When God says, “Seek Me”, He is in effect saying, “Come close to me.  Let Me reveal to you who I am.  I want you to know Me.  Let us enjoy sweet fellowship together.”

God wants a family, but He doesn’t want robots for children.  He wants children who desire to know Him and have a relationship with Him.  Out of love and respect for their Father, they are willing to submit to His leadership and obey Him.  Isn’t that what earthly parents want as well?

This is what delights our heavenly Father’s heart: that we pursue Him.  Not half-heartedly, and not for what we can get from Him, but with our whole heart and the goal of enjoying a deeper relationship with Him.

David, the shepherd-king of the Bible, pursued God in this way.  That is why God called him, “a man after My heart, who will do all My will” (Acts 13:22).

What was David’s primary desire?  He wanted to be close to God.

In Psalm 27:4,8, David wrote, “One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD and to meditate in His temple…When You said, ‘Seek My face’, my heart said to You, ‘Your face, O Lord, I shall seek.’”

Pause for a moment and reflect on these verses.  God is calling you to come closer to Him.

Will you set your heart to seek God’s face?  If so, you can expect to receive the beautiful promise of Jeremiah 29:13.  And along with that reward will come many others (Hebrews 11:6).

Jeremiah 29:13
“You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”

Hebrews 11:6
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (NKJV).

God delights to be pursued.  He wants to be found.  That is why He instructs us in His Word how to seek Him.

Seeking God’s Heart

Reflect on the three passages below.  After each one is a description of the key elements of seeking God revealed in that passage.  Our heavenly Father is encouraging all of us to begin to apply these elements today.  We will be so glad if we do.

2 Chronicles 7:14
“[If] My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Elements of Seeking God:

  • Humble yourself – have a spirit of humility, realizing that you need God
  • Pray – talk to God, listen for His voice, bring your requests to Him with thanksgiving
  • Seek God’s face – the goal is to strengthen your relationship with Him, to discover and understand Who He is, to find out how to please Him, to know His love, to become more like Him
  • Turn from sin – This means to repent, to walk away from whatever displeases God.

Psalm 119:9-11
“How can a young man keep his way pure?  By keeping it according to Your word.  With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments.  Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You.”

Elements of Seeking God:

  • Keep (obey) God’s Word
  • Seek God with all your heart – put effort into it, make seeking God your highest priority
  • A teachable spirit – willing to be corrected (“Do not let me wander…”)
  • Treasure God’s Word in your heart – with the goal of not sinning against God. Planting the Word in your heart is accomplished by meditating on it (see Psalm 119:1-16) – reading it, studying it, reflecting on it, praying to understand it, speaking it in praise and prayer, singing it, obeying it.

Matthew 6:31-33
“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’  For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Elements of Seeking God:

  • Don’t be anxious about earthly needs – God knows your needs. Pray with thanksgiving (see Philippians 4:6-7).
  • Seek first His kingdom – seek to understand and promote God’s purposes, to expand His rule and reign in your own life and in the world around you.
  • Seek first His righteousness – seek to live a holy life that pleases and honors God, and that testifies to others that Jesus Christ lives in you.

Wendy, thank you for sharing the elements of seeking God. Many Christians nowadays go through life not knowing the simplest things they must do in order to experience the presence of God. Your article as uplifted me and I intend to share with those I come across including those in our congregation. May the Lord richly bless your ministry and may you finish the race strong for Christ’s sake. Amen.
