HOLINESS…God’s Greatness?

God gives us this command in 1 Peter 1:16: “Be holy, for I am holy.”

What does “holy” mean, and who is this holy God?

The word “holy” carries the idea of separated, set apart, and cut off. When we look at how “holy” is used in the Bible to describe God, it conveys two ideas: God is great and God is pure.

1.  God is great.

Exodus 15:11 (NASB)

“Who is like You among the gods, O Lord?  Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in praises, working wonders?”

Isaiah 57:15 (NASB)

“For thus says the high and exalted One who lives forever, whose Name is Holy, I dwell on a high and holy place, and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit…”

God is in a class by Himself.  He is set apart from humanity and all creation because He alone is eternal, all-powerful, and all-knowing.  No one else can even come close to His greatness.

We’ll look at the second aspect of God’s holiness in our next blog.
