HEAVEN…What Is The Inheritance Reserved For Us In Heaven?

Have you placed your trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? If yes, then you have a glorious future and a living hope. There is a secure inheritance reserved in Heaven for you. “In [Christ] also we have obtained an inheritance” (Ephesians 1:11).

What is this inheritance? The apostle Peter refers to it as “a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time”. He calls it “the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:5,13). Our inheritance is “heaven” – all that God has promised concerning salvation.

Peter refers to this inheritance as “salvation” and “grace”. Grace means “unmerited favor”. Salvation cannot be earned by our own good works. It is a gift of God that is granted only to those who see their need for a Savior, turn/repent from their sin, and humble themselves to accept Christ’s sacrifice as the only remedy for sin (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Our inheritance in Christ has four defining qualities that make it vastly superior to any earthly inheritance: It is imperishable, undefiled, unfading, and it is reserved in heaven for us (1 Peter 1:4).

 I Peter 1:3-5
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

Our heavenly inheritance is:

Imperishable. It is not subject to death, decay, or corruption. There is no seed of death in it. It will endure forever in perfect condition. Christ is “imperishable”. His body did not decay and death could not hold Him. He is seated in Heaven at the right hand of God, interceding for us (1 Peter 3:22; Romans 8:4). Christ’s Word is imperishable. Through it, we are born again into God’s kingdom (1 Peter 1:23). We are receiving “a kingdom that cannot be shaken”, “where neither moth nor rust destroys” (Hebrews 12:28; Matthew 6:20).

Undefiled. It is not susceptible to being spoiled, stained, or made impure by sin. It is free from anything that would weaken or contaminate it. It is in its own nature pure, holy, and perfect. Our Savior Christ is perfect. Hebrews 7:26 describes Him as “a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens;” Heaven is pure, holy, and perfect. Revelation 21:27 says, “and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (i.e. those made righteous and holy through the blood of Christ).

Unfading. On earth, everything is subject to fading, to gradually disappearing or dying. “The grass withers, and the flower falls off” (1 Peter 1:24). Our inheritance in Christ is not of this world. Colors will never lose their brightness. Light will never become dim. Everything will retain its freshness, vigor, strength, and health – permanently.

Reserved in Heaven for you. It is already prepared (Matthew 25:34). It is being kept secure in Heaven, where “thieves do not break in or steal” (Matthew 6:20). It is being kept specially for you. Your portion will not be given away to someone else. God has given you His Holy Spirit as a pledge, a down payment, a guarantee that you will receive what belongs to you in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:13-14).

Your inheritance is marked by the four qualities discussed above. It is characterized by unchanging newness, freshness, and purity. God says, “Behold, I am making all things new” (Revelation 21:5).

If you have trusted in Christ, God has already made you a “new creation” in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Now you are waiting for your inheritance, the culmination of your salvation. At Christ’s return, you will receive a new, glorified body like His (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; 1 Corinthians chapter 15). Your soul will be made new (1 John 3:2). Your heart, mind, will, and emotions will be perfectly conformed to your Savior’s, free from ungodly thoughts and a tendency to sin.

There’s more…God will create “a new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13). This is where we will live forever with our loving God. We will enjoy permanent joy and peace, free from pain, fear, and sorrow (Revelation 21, 22).

What a wonderful inheritance! No wonder Titus 2:13 calls the appearing of Christ our “blessed hope”!

In light of these truths, how should we respond?

1 Peter 1:13 “Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

1 John 3:2-3   “Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.”

Hebrews 12:28   “Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;”
