God Part 1

God is a relational Being.  He wants you to know Him.  That is why He has revealed Himself through His Creation and through His Word, the Bible.  As you think on the Scriptures below, open your heart to the One who has the answers to all your questions and your every need.

Headings: Self-Existent and Eternal Creator, Creator of Mankind, God Revealed Through Creation, All-Powerful (Almighty, Omnipotent), Present Everywhere (All-Seeing, Omnipresent), All-Knowing (Omniscient), One True God, The Trinity, Christ Is God – Christ Reveals God

Self-Existent and Eternal Creator

God existed before anything existed.  He is self-existent; no one created Him.  He is eternal; He has always been and will always be.  This is reflected in His name, “I AM”, which we know as Yahweh or Jehovah.

Genesis 1:1 — In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  (Note: God is distinct from His creation.  Created things are not God.)

Psalm 90:2 — Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

Revelation 1:8 — “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Creator of Mankind

Genesis 1:26 — Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Psalm 100:3 — Know that the Lord Himself is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves…

God Revealed Through Creation

Romans 1:18-20 — 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

Acts 14:17 — And yet He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good and gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.

Psalm 14:1 — The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”…

All-Powerful  (Almighty, Omnipotent)

Nothing is too difficult for God.  He exercises His power consistent with His character and His Word: He cannot lie and He is faithful (Titus 1:2; 2 Timothy 2:13).

Isaiah 40:25-28 — 25 “To whom then will you liken Me that I would be his equal?” says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, the One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, not one of them is missing.  27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, and the justice due me escapes the notice of my God”?  28 Do you not know? Have you not heard?  The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired.  His understanding is inscrutable.

Jeremiah 32:17 — ‘Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You.’

Matthew 19:26 — And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Revelation 4:8 — 8 And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.”

Present Everywhere (All-Seeing, Omnipresent)

Scripture reveals that God’s eyes are everywhere.  He sees everything – what is visible as well as what is invisible.  Absolutely nothing escapes His notice.

Psalm 94:7-9 — 7 They have said, “The Lord does not see, nor does the God of Jacob pay heed.”  8 Pay heed, you senseless among the people; and when will you understand, stupid ones?  9 He who planted the ear, does He not hear?  He who formed the eye, does He not see?

Psalm 139:7-12 — 7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? or where can I flee from Your presence?  8 If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, 10 even there Your hand will lead me, and Your right hand will lay hold of me.  11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, and the light around me will be night,” 12 even the darkness is not dark to You, and the night is as bright as the day.  Darkness and light are alike to You.

Proverbs 15:3 — The eyes of the Lord are in every place, watching the evil and the good. Hebrews 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

All-Knowing (Omniscient)

God knows all and understands all.  He searches all hearts and observes everyone’s ways.  His omniscience is linked to His sovereignty because He knows everything about the past, present, and future, and He works all things according to His purposes.  God knows our every need.  Jesus told His followers, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:8).

Psalm 139:1-4, 23-24 — 1 O Lord, You have searched me and known me.  2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar.  3 You scrutinize my path and my lying down, and are intimately acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O Lord, You know it all… 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24 and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

Isaiah 42:9 — “Behold, the former things have come to pass, now I declare new things; before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”

Romans 11:33-34 — 33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! 34 For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor?

Hebrews 4:12 — For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

One True God

God reveals that He is the one true God through the beauty and complexity of His Creation and through His Word, the Bible.  The Bible gives us details of God’s dealings with people and reveals God’s love for mankind and His remedy for the sin problem: Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.  No other so-called god has the power to create the world; no other so-called god knows and meets the deepest human need for forgiveness of sins and restoration of relationship with our Maker.

Isaiah 43:10 — “You are My witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and My servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He.  Before Me there was no God formed, and there will be none after Me.”

Exodus 20:3-7 — 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.  4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.  7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

Jeremiah 10:10-12 — 10 But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King.  At His wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure His indignation.  11 Thus you shall say to them, “The gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.”  12 It is He who made the earth by His power, who established the world by His wisdom; and by His understanding He has stretched out the heavens. John 17:3 This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent

The Trinity

God is eternally existent in three coequal Persons – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. These three are One in essence and will, yet each has unique characteristics and function.

Genesis 1:26 — Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.”

Luke 3:21-22 — 21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

Matthew 28:19 — Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

2 Corinthians 13:14 — The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

Christ Is God – Christ Reveals God

John 1:1-4,14,18 — 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.  14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

John 5:18-19,30 — 18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.  19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 30 I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”

John 10:30,37-38 — 30 “I and the Father are one…37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”

Hebrews 1:1-3 — 1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He (Jesus the Son) is the radiance of [God’s] glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
