Secrets To Memorizing Scripture: How To Quiet Your Mind pt 1

Memorizing Scripture is crucial to building your relationship with God and learning to live according to His ways.  It will enable you to find the strength and peace you are looking for.  This is why God gave this command to His people:

Deuteronomy 6:6,7
“These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.”

One of the most important keys to memorizing Scripture is to quiet your mind. What does “quiet” mean?  Still and free from disturbance or noise.  Free from turmoil, strife, or alarm.  Tranquil and peaceful.

When your mind is quiet, you can focus on God’s Word.  You can obey God’s instruction to “give attention” to His Word (Proverbs 4:20).

Finding a quiet place is a good first step to quieting your mind.  Find a room you can go into and shut the door.

Find a “quiet time”, perhaps early in the morning or in the evening after the children go to bed.

Eliminate noise and distractions.  Turn off the TV, radio, cell phone, and computer. Let others know this is your time with God, and ask them to not interrupt you.

We’ll look more at how to quiet your mind in our next update.  Meanwhile, here’s a Scripture you can read aloud and think about that will help you quiet your mind:

Isaiah 30:15
“For thus the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said,
‘In repentance and rest you will be saved,
In quietness and trust is your strength…’”
