Keys To Living Life With God

Have you ever wanted to get to know someone better?  What actions did you purposefully take?  Did it require re-setting your priorities and laying aside less important pursuits?

God’s greatest desire is to have a close personal relationship with you.  He paid the ultimate price to make that possible.  He demonstrated His love for you by giving up what was most precious to Him – His precious Son Jesus Christ.  God did this so that you could receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

Christianity is a relationship with Jesus. You are His. You are no longer your own.  You were bought with a price.  You now have purpose because God has called you to live for Him.  His plan is for you to be transformed to become like Jesus in character.  He wants you to serve Him.  He is looking forward to someday living with you forever in a beautiful new earth where there will be no sin, no sickness, no death, no night, no fear, no sorrow, and no tears!

In light of these truths, how will you respond to God’s call to deepen your relationship with Him?

The best way to get to know someone is to spend time with that person on a regular basis.  Eat meals together.  Ask questions and listen.  Go places with them. Watch them “in action” at work, home, school, recreational activities, and so on. In short, relationships are best built by living life together.  This is what Jesus and His disciples did, day in and day out, for about three years.

In a similar way, God wants you to live life with Him.  You may be wondering how you can do that.  After all, you can’t see Him as a physical being as the disciples saw Jesus.  Be assured that God has already given you everything you need in order to deepen your relationship with Him.

Accessible
God has made Himself accessible to you.  He invites you to talk with Him at any time about anything.  He longs for you to ask for His help.  Your part is to pray and listen for His voice.

The Word
God has given you His written Word, the Holy Scriptures.  God’s Word reveals who He is and His plan to rescue mankind from the power of sin through the death and resurrection of His Son. God speaks through His Word. Your part is to read, study, and meditate on His Word, and obey it.

Holy Spirit
God gives His Holy Spirit to everyone who trusts in Christ. The Holy Spirit will help you understand and apply Scripture to your life.  He will lead, guide, and direct you. He will strengthen you to resist temptation and live a God-honoring life. Your part is to submit to His teaching and guidance.

The Church
God has put you into a body of believers, the Church.  He has given you spiritual gifts designed to help build up and edify the Church so it can fulfill its mission on the earth. Your part is to worship and serve God with other Christians in a local, Bible-believing church.

God is calling you to deepen your relationship with Him.  He has already provided everything you need to live life with Him.  Now it is up to you to do “your part”.  Are you willing?  It will demand a sacrifice of your valuable time.

Your life will become more God-focused as you learn to do your part.  The “spiritual disciplines” of prayer, Bible study, meditation, worshiping, and serving in a local church will teach you how to focus on Him.  You will begin to understand these disciplines, and how to implement them into your life.  Richard Foster’s timeless classic “Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth” is a great resource to help you learn to live life with God.
