Pain. I’d been living with it for months since the birth of my daughter. During childbirth, my tailbone had moved out of place…and the doctor couldn’t fix it. My only hope was a miracle.

“Does anyone have a prayer need?”  It was my first time in a home Bible study, and the twenty or so people gathered there were excited to pray and see God answer.

Then they told me, “We believe it’s God’s will to heal. You lay your hand on the place where it hurts, and we’ll pray in the name of Jesus for your healing.”

As they prayed in the name of Jesus, I felt heat in my tailbone and was immediately released from pain. Like the man in the Bible, I jumped up and began dancing with joy. Everyone else danced too, thanking and praising Jesus.

That was in 1983, and my tailbone has remained in place ever since.

Experiences can be wonderful, but we should never base our beliefs about God’s will solely on experiences. My healing demonstrates that God was gracious to me in my time of need, and that He still heals today. It doesn’t necessarily prove that it’s God’s will to heal.

To find the truth about God’s will, we must go to the Bible, God’s inspired Word. God’s Word is His will.

The Bible on Divine Healing and God’s Will to Heal

What does the Bible say about diving healing? Much. In both the Old and New Testaments, numerous Scriptures attest that God is who He says He is: “Yahweh-Rapha”, “the Lord who Heals” (Exodus 15:26). The healing ministry of Jesus Christ is a perfect example.

Acts 10:38
“You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

What did Jesus do? “He went about doing good and healing”.   Who did He heal? “All who were oppressed by the devil”. Why? Because “God was with Him”.

Jesus boldly proclaimed to all that He was the Son of God. In John 5:19, Jesus told the people, “The Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.” Then in John 6:38, Jesus declared, “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” Jesus was God’s will in action.

Throughout the four Gospels, Jesus performed a multitude of healings and set many free from demonic oppression. Yet there is not a single instance where He turned down anyone who came to Him for healing.

The distraught leper in Mark 1:40-42 had doubts. “Jesus, I know You can heal me, but are You willing?” This is the same question many of us ask today. We should be greatly encouraged by Jesus’ response.

“And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

Jesus went beyond a simple “I am willing. Be healed.” He gave the leper something else he so desperately needed: a personal touch. Why? Because He was “moved with compassion”. Matthew 14:14 records this: “[Jesus] saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.”

Is Jesus Still Willing to Heal Today?

The answer is a resounding “Yes!” because Jesus never changes. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). God assures us in 2 Corinthians 1:20 that “as many as are the promises of God, in [Christ] they are yes…”

What can we conclude from these Scriptures? What do YOU conclude?

I know what you’re thinking. If it is God’s will to heal, why do so many people remain sick or die – even when they appear to have great faith and others are praying for them?

That is a good question and I confess that I don’t have all the answers. Yet, in spite of this, I have to believe that God’s Word is true. I have to believe that God wants to heal and He wants us to receive it. There is no other rational explanation for the numerous healing examples and instructions in His Word.

Do You Want to Know How to Receive Healing?

God reveals in His Word not just one, but a variety of methods by which we may receive. He instructs us how to remove from our lives major hindrances to healing, such as ignorance of His Word, unbelief, and sin. Our compassionate God even addresses natural factors that influence our health, such as diet, lifestyle, and stress. Friends, God is for us! He wants to heal us.

Jesus told a grieving father whose young daughter had just died, “Do not be afraid any longer; only believe” (Luke 8:50). Then He restored the girl to life. Into a seemingly hopeless situation, Jesus brought hope. He confirmed the truth of Jeremiah 32:17: nothing is too difficult for God.

How can we, like the grieving father in this story, let go of fear and learn to “only believe”? How can we assure our hearts that God truly wants to heal?

There is only one way to build faith and trust in God in healing or any other area. According to the Bible, our faith grows from listening to the Truth of God’s Word. “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). Our instruction in Acts 17:11 is to examine the Scriptures daily, seeking to know the truth. Then in John 8:31-32, we are encouraged to continue in Jesus’ Word.

“[Jesus said] … ‘If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’”
