How to Kick the Worry Habit

It’s two in the morning.  You wish you could sleep, but your mind is racing from one problem to another.  There is talk of downsizing at your work.  Are you going to get laid off?  How will you pay the bills?  Can you pay for your child’s college tuition?  What about retirement?

In your mind, the list of problems grows, and you’re consumed with worry.

What can you do to stop worrying? You know that God does not want you to worry, but how can you put God’s Word into practice?

Words You Can Trust

Philippians 4:6,7 gives a solid answer and a promise you can trust.

“6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

If you have already received Christ, God has adopted you as His own child.  He is your Father, and He is saying to you, “Don’t worry about anything.  Tell me all your problems. I already know what you’re facing.  Ask Me for help.”

“All things are possible with Me.  When you pray, thank Me and expect Me to work on your behalf.  Trust Me.  Then you’ll have My peace.”

Do You Need This Attitude Adjustment?

God can take care of your problems if you let Him.  But first, you must recognize that you need His help.  You must humble yourself and let go of the problems.  Then give them to Him.

1 Peter 5:6-7 says this: “6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”

Worry is a sin.  It is the opposite of trusting God.  It is pride, trying to hold onto the problem and work it out using your own efforts.  We must humble ourselves so that God can give us His grace and His help (James 4:6).

How To Talk To God

James 1:22-25 promises that if you practice doing what God’s Word says, you “will be blessed” in what you do.

Do you want to kick the worry habit?  You need to view it as sin and repent.  Turn away from worry.  Cast your cares on God and learn to pray with thanksgiving.

You can pray something like this:

“Dear Father, I confess that I have worried.  I have sinned.  Please forgive me and help me learn to trust You to work out all my problems.”

“Father, I give You all the cares in my life: all the people, situations, and needs (name them one by one).  Please work in each one, and I thank You for it.

Keep thanking God.  Every time worry starts to creep back in, thank and praise Him for working in that particular situation, person, or need…and see what He will do.


You can pray with more confidence if you do two simple things.  First, read Bible verses that help you understand who God is, and His plan for you.

Matthew 19:26 says that with God, “all things are possible.”

Second, read Bible verses that relate to the problems you are facing.  For example, if lack of money has been causing you to worry, find verses that teach how to manage money wisely.  Read God’s promises concerning money.

Luke 6:38 says this about giving: “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”

Matthew 6:33 helps put financial matters in proper perspective: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Here’s a little jingle to help you remember not to worry.

I refuse to worry
‘cause worry is a sin.
I give my cares to God
And I trust in Him.

God will give me grace
If I do things HIS way,
If I humble myself
And learn to pray.
